Tameshigiri

James Williams Practicing Tameshigiri with his Samurai Style Katana

John Lewis Cutting with Bainite Katana

At Bugei Trading Company we spend a significant amount of time and energy using and testing the swords that we sell. This kenjutsu and tameshigiri is one of our pleasures as well as our responsibility. We like to challenge ourselves as well as our blades. The better we get the better we can design and evaluate the swords that we sell to you, our customers. James does most of his cutting practice and demonstrations with our Samurai koshirae katana. Using the very swords that we sell to you is our testament to their quality and function. At the Blade Show in Orange County both James and Tony cut cleanly through wara with 1 inch oak dowels in the center. This was done with no loss of edge to the blade which James demonstrated by cleanly slicing paper with the Samurai katana that had just cut through the oak.
We are now offering 3 different kinds of wara for cutting as well as two different cutting stands. We are very excited about the unique wara that we are offering that is exclusive to Bugei, thanks to Big Tony. It is longer and wider (61x41), as is evidenced by the picture below, than other wara. It cuts clean like goza without the stress and abrasion that goza places on the blade. It is also the most economical to cut. The picture below shows Igusa goza at the bottom, beach mat in the middle, and the Bugei wara at the top. Each is a single mat roll, the Bugei wara is significantly larger in diameter. When rolled it is 122 taller than the Igusa goza and 142 taller than the tatami. This gives you more mat to cut for your money.

Bugei Goza

In our quest to provide the highest quality samurai swords on the market we have also undertaken to provide the best quality and most reasonably priced cutting targets. Our very popular Bugei Wara has been a big hit with serious practitioners of tameshigiri. We are now offering the highest quality goza available anywhere. This goza is exclusive to Bugei as is our Bugei Wara. Our new goza is denser than goza offered by other companies which means that you get more cut for your money. One rolled and soaked Bugei Goza is equal to almost 1 1/2 times the size of other goza on the market. Because this goza is new it is a uniform 3 feet x 6 feet every time without the abrasive dirt and silica that can scratch your blade when you cut. We have all of the target material featured here in stock ready for immediate shipment.

Bugei Wara

It takes 3-4 tatami (beach mats) to equal the diameter and cutting resistance of one of the Bugei wara. This, coupled with the added height of the rolled mat, means more cuts per roll. Because the Bugei wara holds less water it also does not stain the sword as much. When rolled it is 12 inches taller than the tatami. This gives you more mat to cut for your money. Cutting Stand $95.00

Along with wara we are offering a cutting stand. Strongly built from Douglas fir these stands will hold your wara firmly when you are doing tameshigiri. If you wish to build your own stand we offer instructional drawings free of charge, call for information. We strongly recommend that you get proper instruction before you attempt to cut. This is a dangerous activity that takes practice and proper instruction in order to be done safely. (The price of the stand includes shipping).

Cutting Stand 3 $120.00

We are proud to introduce another stand, made specifically for cutting multiple targets. This stand is made out of Douglas fir and the pegs top crossbar is supported with steel braces. This stand has proved durable enough for cutting up to three targets, however we always strongly suggest proper instruction before attempting any cutting. (The price of the stand includes shipping)
