Shirasaya

Blade without Bo-Hi

Blade Mounted in Shirasaya $975.00

There have been many request for blades in shira saya. Here are two impressive and very beautiful swords hand forged and folded from Swedish Powdered Steel mounted in shira saya (resting scabbard). One blade has bo-hi and the other does not so that the choice is up to you the customer. As impressive as the blades are the shira saya themselves are exceptionally well made and truly provide a fitting mount for the sword. Shira saya are not designed to be used. The are a resting saya for storing or displaying blades when they are not mounted. In Ancient Japan a single sword may have had several different sets of mounting i.e.. katana, tachi, tachi in battle mounts, etc.. While bo-hi lightens the blade it also reduces lateral strength. If your prime objective is kata or iaido, bo-hi may be an excellent choice. If however you are interested in using your sword for heavy cutting then you might not want to have bo-hi in your blade.

Blade with Bo-Hi $1,045.00

The beautiful Hada and hamon are both easily visible. The hamon is produced by the heat treatment and the hada by the forging and folding process.

The blade is fitted with a habaki so that the sword fits in the shira saya. The hamon is clearly visible as is the hada.

Here is a view of the kissaki and the boshi. The hada, grain of the steel, is plainly visible as is the yokote.

The quality of the shira saya is excellent in the tradition of Japanese saya makers.
