The
47 Ronin parts I & II On
March 14, 1701, in the royal capital of Edo, Lord Asano
is goaded into attacking the higher ranking Lord Kiru while
on sacred ground. As a result of this grave offense, Asano
is told to commit hara-kiri, his house is abolished and
his properties abandoned. But 47 of AsanoÕs samurai retainers
vow vengeance upon Lord Kiru. Carrying out this year-long
plot, however, comes at a terrible price, for they ultimately
will have to take their own lives, in order not to dishonor
AsanoÕs memory. The Japanese military commissioned director
Kenji Mizoguchi to make THE 47 RONIN Š they wanted a ferocious
morale booster based on the familiar story of The Loyal
47 Ronin. Instead Mizoguchi chose for his source Mayama
Chushingura, a cerebral play dealing with the story, and
he created one of the most poetic, complex, and visually
stunning films of the war. THE 47 RONIN, however, was a
commercial failure Š released in Japan one week before Pearl
harbor, the military and most audiences found the first
part to be too serious, but the studio and Mizoguchi both
regarded it as so important that part two was put into production
despite part oneÕs lukewarm reception. Renowned by postwar
scholars lucky enough to have seen it in Japan, THE 47 RONIN
wasnÕt shown in America until the 1970Õs. B&W 222 minutes,
Japanese with English subtitles.

Chushingura
In
March 1701 the era of JapanÕs great civil wars has been over
for a century, but the samurai warrior class lingers on. The
new young lord, Asano (Yuzo Kayama), from the fierce country
domain of Ako gracefully accepts his initiation into state
duties in the capital of Edo. But the old Grand Master of
Ceremonies, Kira (Chusha Ichikawa), betrays him when Lord
Asano refuses to bribe him for his advice on official etiquette.
Enraged and humiliated by KiraÕs merciless greed, Asano draws
his sword in the ShogunÕs palace, a capital offense. Kira
suffers only a slight wound, but gloats over the mock trial
that condemns Asano to ritual hara-kiri suicide. AkoÕs lands
are assigned to a new lord, and its warriors become ronin,
masterless samurai, with nowhere to go and no ancestral lord
to serve. The outrage lives on in their hearts, but they are
forbidden to act, under pain of death. Chamberlain Oishi (Koshiro
Matsumoto), AsanoÕs wise and loyal chief retainer, calms the
others and urges them to obey in silence, as their day of
revenge will come. They wait for OishiÕs word. The succeeding
months of secret fury, humiliation, self-sacrifice, poverty
and planning reveal the Japanese virtue of personal loyalty
in all its glory. When the faithful 47 arrive at the snowy
day to avenge their lordÕs honor, each individual personality,
from the stoical Oishi to the hotheaded, hard drinking Tawaraboshi
(Toshiro Mifune) has become a symbol of the samurai spirit.

medieval adventure unfolds against the landscape of the civil

most exciting and tension filled of InagakiÕs trilogy, Duel
at Ganryu Island provides samurai fans with some of the
most scintillating swordplay and battle sequences ever filmed.
It is the final showdown for Musashi Miyamoto and his archrival
Kojiro Sasaki. Once again Toshiro Mifune brings depth, complexity

actor in Japanese film. Favorably compared to both Cool
Hand Luke and Shane when it was first released, Samurai

Sanjuro
The arrogant hero of Yojimbo returns to the screen in another
offbeat action film from Akira Kurosawa, the playful master
of the samurai genre. In perhaps his funniest work, Kurosawa
teams Sanjuro, a crude but highly skilled warrior, with nine
hopelessly na•ve samurai in a fight against clan corruption.
With unveiled contempt, Sanjuro (the magnificent Toshiro Mifune)
marvels at the ineptitude of his young coconspirators. The
slovenly samurai is hilariously out of place in the lavish
castle city where genteel ladies pooh-pooh his savage ways,
even as he saves their lives. This comic yet violent spoof
dazzles with glorious widescreen cinematography and the thrilling
swordplay of Tatsuya Nakadai (Ran, Kagemusha). Special Features
Include: Original theatrical trailer, with rare behind-the-scenes
footage. 1962, 96 minutes Black and White, Optional English

Yojimbo
One
of the most popular Japanese films ever released in the U.S.,
Yojimbo radiates KurosawaÕs love for the American Western
and his flair for action and dark humor. Like so many Western
heroes, YojimboÕs samurai-for-hire is an outsider in a town
gone bad. However, Kurosawa replaces the traditional clean-cut
hero with a cynical and daring mercenary who cooly turns the
war between two evil clans to his own advantage. Powered by
the commanding performance of Toshiro Mifune and the extraordinary
cinematography of Kazuo Miyagawa, this explosive film continues
to influence film makers from around the world. Remade as
A Fist Full of Dollars with Clint Eastwood, the original remains
both a thrilling action classic and a tongue-in-cheek portrait
of human weakness, greed, and violence. BLACK & WHITE/110
